Vogue- Development

From looking at designers I decided I wanted to include some illustration and make my posters more visual even if just a small section. I did some small doodles of objects to represent the term 'media.' and again, I Scanned them in and tryed them out in different colours.

Vogue- Poster development

Tried the designs out with black, pink and then a mixture of the two. I decided on the mixture of the two, I thought the pink was appropriate to the subject matter and audience of women, although stereostypical, but it also seemed to work well alongside the black.

Don't Panic. Vogue

To get us started with the project we had a concept building session, we were to come up with 30 associated words that we relate to the word Vogue.
From these words we created 30 pictorgrams to represent the words, some proving to be more difficult than others.
Narrowing this down to just five favourites, I looked into size 0 and vanity. The meaning of size 0 and how it portrayed through the media.

From looking at existing illustrators I decided I wanted to create my posters using illustration, something I have no really used before. Also looking at the book 'Hand Job' I wanted to mix this with type and create a busy, informative piece.

Looking through 'Hand Job' I saw many different, unique styles and tried to recreate some myself, I then scanned these in and completed them on photoshop.

Hot Dog fold

We were shown how to produce the hotdog fold in the lesson, ensuring we measured the lines instead of just folding them so the pages lined up when it was folded together. The hotdog fold means we couold produce our 20 books with one single sheet of paper for each, reducing the cost.

We tried out different paper sizes and cutting out different sections of the books to see what vaiations we could come up with.

End of evaluation Self Evaluation

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I believe my time management skills have improved throughtout this module giving myself time to print etc and organising time for research and production of final products.
Within the module we have been given workshops which have allowed us to gain knowledge on Final Cut and also book binding where we were shown basic skills and a range of uses for these. I am now able to create a PDFpresentation which helped me with a project within the module.
For the 100 project I believe I developed my hand drawn type skills as I drew out 100 phrases with the same typeface allowing me to improve as I go. By scanning these in and re-arranging them and inserting into net etc I think I have also developed my Photoshop skills.

What approaches to/ methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your development process?
Over the christmas period we were asked to gain 100 opinions and so I tried out different approaches to reseach such as internet surveys and yahoo answers to gain a wide range of opinions. These methods paved the way for my project as I based it on quotes and phrases people had given me about the bad things about Christmas. Also for the What If... project we gave out questionnaires and also made a phone call to the local youth centre to ask their views, this is a method of research I have never uysed before and it proved to be very helpful.

What strenths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise these?
I think I have done a sufficient amount of research to back up my projects although it probably could probably never me enough to inform decisions.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?
Within this module I believe we struggled to work together as a group in the What If.. project, therefore this was a large weakness and most likely affected our work. Also when it comes to end products and packaging I believe my work lacks a professional finish and could be improved throught printing etc.

Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you exprect to gain from doing this?
Next time I would like to hopfully try and involve everyone in group discussions and work no matter how difficult it is to work with people.
Also if I am struggliong with work or need advice I want to ask for guidance.
Try out new things I have never used before, new software and ways of producing work, Final cut etc.

How would you grade yourself on the follwing areas:
Attendance- 5
Punctuality-5
Motivation- 4
Commitment-4
Quantiy of work produced- 3
Quality of work produced-3
Contribution to the group-3

Gift tags
I initially struggled with how I would package my gift tags, but through research I again found the most common and practical was the celpohane packed with a cardboard tag fastened at the top. I thought this may be difficult because of finding celephane and fastening edges without making them visible but it turned out to be quite succesfull. I created by own labels for the top and simply stappled them on to fasten the packet. I put two designs in each packet, ten of each

Wrapping Paper

From looking at exsiting wrapping paper packaging I found the most common and best way to package was with celophane wrapping and a basic label with details of the roll length and name. So I created my own label and wrapped each roll with a gingham ribbon and then celephane.

Gift tags

Initially I created 80 different gift card designs to make the collectino 100, however after the final crit on Monday I was given advice on putting the range into catergories, so after this used the designs from the wrapping paper and made ten of each which made much more sense and more realistic like something you would find in the shops.

Wrapping Paper
I created 10 designs of wrapping paper based on the 'Xmas My Arse' theme, with light hearted quotes and phrases I collected for my primary research. My problem from here is how to package them.

Book Manipuation

Starting with an existing completely intact book, we looked into book art and ways people manipulated pages of the book to create intricit designs. Using the theme of the page we were to maipulate our own books to create something appropriate to this.

Because my book was named PC Polly, I came up with a few ideas of how I could create something, but settled on the 999 emergency call theme.

Studio Lighting

We were given an introduction into the photgraphy department where we took a DSLR each. We worked in the studio with lighting and coloured paper to create the lighting affects that we wanted.

Collection 100 Development

After the crit I was given more direction on where to go, specifically identifying my audience as old people, most likely men, allowed me to come up with a more structured idea with a clear focus on who I am aiming it at.

I decided to create a range of products for old men, using the quotes and phrases I have gathered from my research and using the same type/illustrative style.
I looked at old man patterns like gingham and tweed and suitable colours which would be appropriate for them.

For the gift tags and crackers I looked at a few different stocks I could use and found the most appropriate to be this thick brown paper which would allow me to print the black designs on and still be visible.

For the wrapping paper I considered using plain blank paper and getting my design put onto it, but then realised brown parcel paper would be most appropriate as the colour and texture is would suit the audience. I picked ten designs for the wrapping paper which were slightly humorous and light hearted and printed these on to A2 sheets of parcel paper, above is a small A4 mock up of one design.
