What is a line?

This is a line of photographs I have taken at monument metro station in Newcastle taken over a number of days to capture different capacity's of people, different times of day and the affect that time has on the station. Some photos portray the station as an empty, quiet station whilst others show a busy, moving place.

This is my flip book of images to capture motion. A series of photographs one after another.

I initially started the project with the idea of drawing continuous line drawings every day. I soon moved away form this idea and onto documenting with photography instead.

After deciding on documenting our flat kitchen every morning and evening, I put the photos I had so far together. I think the subject matter may be too boring, I like the idea of having subtle differences from day to day and then with a larger amount of photos an end product of a flipbook or video would be something I would like to create.

Final book

For the final design I printed the title 'Blue Skies' on the cover and cut them out so that the blue sky from the image inside would show through onto the white front cover.

The main problem with this was cutting out the individual letters, it proved to be quite difficult and may have let down the over look of the books.

Book development

First of all I had the idea of using the front cover as a window which would somehow open up to show the sky behind it. However, this proved to be quite difficult because since the book only contains 6 pages without back and front it would be wasting two pages of the book. Also I found it difficult to open up the window itself.

I then had the idea of using each page as a letter to spell out blue but with block letters so that not much of each page had to be cut out. I tried this out but decided it may be too obvious and take the attention away from the sky theme.

Book

After my initial given category of blue, I narrowed this down to sky. With the intention of taking photographs of the sky at different times of day and different positions, I hoped to gather a range of colour variations and shape variations in the sky. Here are some of the photographs I took:

Hot Dog fold

We were shown how to produce the hotdog fold in the lesson, ensuring we measured the lines instead of just folding them so the pages lined up when it was folded together. The hotdog fold means we couold produce our 20 books with one single sheet of paper for each, reducing the cost.

We tried out different paper sizes and cutting out different sections of the books to see what vaiations we could come up with.

Book Manipuation

Starting with an existing completely intact book, we looked into book art and ways people manipulated pages of the book to create intricit designs. Using the theme of the page we were to maipulate our own books to create something appropriate to this.

Because my book was named PC Polly, I came up with a few ideas of how I could create something, but settled on the 999 emergency call theme.
